2. Universal Principles
 
  Article 05- Life  
5.1 Life  
  By virtue of reason and common sense, it is a founding principle of this Constitution that everything in the universe is made from the same fundamental building blocks, that everything is living to some degree.
 
5.2 Level of awareness  
  While everything shares common traits, it is a principle of this Constitution to make distinction between objects based on their inherent level of awareness and self-awareness.
 
  In the case of hydro-Carbon life, self-awareness is recognized as a trait possessed by all vertebrate animals to some degree. In the case of non-hydro carbon life, self-awareness is recognizes as a trait possessed by only advanced autonomous neural computers.
 
5.3 Respect of self-aware life  
  It shall be a founding principle of this Constitution that all life and especially self-aware life shall be respected, whether hydro-carbon or non hydro-carbon in form.
 
5.4 Abuse and torture of animals a crime  
  While the rights to possess animals for livestock, pets, environment and research is honoured, by this Constitution, the cruel abuse and torture of animals shall be considered a crime.  
  Furthermore, it is an expectation that where animals are held in captivity that they are housed in conditions that meet basic acceptable levels of sanitation and are provided with food and water free from contaminants and artificial growth or hormone stimulants.
